Medication and Pain relief
Ahead of treatment
You may with to pre-medicate with your chosen pain relief about an hour ahead of the procedure. We request no nurofen to be administered prior to the appointment as it acts as a blood thinner. The patient will likely be crying as we have to hold them still during the procedure for safety and precision of the treatment. However the treated area will not be painful immediately after the surgery sue to the analgesic effect of the Waterlase. The Waterlase compare to traditional methods of surgery is minimally invasive and is much less painful.
Your child your choice. Some parents may choose to use a homeopathic medication prior to treatment and some may choose a pre medicated options. We only request no Nurofen as it may thin the blood which may cause issues during the treatment.
After treatment
Following treatment we immediately bring our patients back to the mother in a private area where we encourage skin to skin contact and a feed, either breast or bottle. The patient will experience different degrees of discomfort for the first 1-3 days following the procedure and will all depend on the nature of the surgery required to gain a full release. We recommend a relaxed at home environment with plenty more skin to skin for mother and baby such as baths together to help provide natural pain relief. This is especially important for infants under 4 weeks of age where unusual pain relief medication is not recommended.
For those older than 4 weeks of age, parents may decide to use their chosen pain-relief according to the advice of their health practitioner and to administer it about an hour prior for a more comfortable feed.
Parents wishing to be present in the treatment room
At MS Dental we have highly trained staff on hands assisting in the procedure for your child including a Paediatric registered nurse. We have found that we are more efficient when we can allow our full attention on the patient and allowing us to return them to the parents as quickly as possible (usually within 2-3 mins). In particular, where a child is breastfed following surgery, it is important that the mother is as calm as possible to allow for milk let-down and to encourage the infant to settle quickly.
After Treatment Care and what to expect
It is very normal for a small amount of oozing in the following few days after surgery and a little blood goes a long way amidst saliva. Generally, a small amount of blood is not a concern. You may experience some bleeding occurring after a stretch but stops quickly. If the bleeding continues and you are concerned please contact the number given to you on the day of the procedure.
Having just gone through a surgical procedure you can expect your infant or child to be irritable, or unsettled for the remainder of the day. They may be very tired and rest. If they will not settle or take the any milk the first step is to contact your IBCLC – International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Try remaining calm, provide skin to skin contact such as taking a bath together and attempt to feed. These challengers can continue for a few days depending on the healing process for the individual.
If you are concerned at all please contact the practice on 49538614
Improvement in symptoms
We encourage our patients to continue to see the body worker as recommended by them to help in improving any symptoms that was present.
After the release the change in function to the tongue can be highly variable, from virtually instantaneous to a few months. There are many factors that can contribute to this but with continuous support from your IBCLC or body working this can help achieve great results.
The importance of the support of an IBCLC and body worker post-surgery cannot be understated. This multidisciplinary support is critical to minimising the chance of reattachment and overcoming established dysfunction.
