Dental emergency first aid
Acting quickly often makes the difference between saving and losing a tooth. These steps buy you time - they don’t replace treatment, so please still call your nearest clinic.
Knocked-out tooth
Minutes matter. Best outcomes occur when the tooth is re-implanted within 30 to 60 minutes. Pick it up by the crown - the white part - and never touch the root. If dirty, rinse gently in milk or saline for a few seconds without scrubbing. If you can, place it back in the socket and bite softly on a clean cloth; otherwise store it in milk or in your cheek and come straight in. Baby teeth are usually not re-implanted, so call for advice.
Severe toothache or abscess
Constant, throbbing pain, pain that wakes you at night, or a tender lump on the gum can indicate infection or an abscess, which will not resolve on its own. Rinse with warm salty water and take pain relief as directed on the packet, then book an urgent appointment. Treatment may involve draining the infection, root canal treatment, or extraction.
Broken or chipped tooth
Keep any fragments in milk, rinse your mouth with warm water, and apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling. Try not to chew on that side. We’ll recommend the most conservative repair, which may be a filling, a crown, or cosmetic bonding for front teeth.
Lost filling or crown
Keep the crown if you still have it, avoid chewing on that side, and keep the area clean. Prompt repair protects the tooth from further damage and decay. In many cases we can re-cement the existing crown or place a new restoration on the same day.
Facial swelling
Swelling can mean infection and needs checking fast - call us as soon as you can. If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or significant swelling that is spreading, treat it as a medical emergency and call 000 or attend your nearest hospital.
Managing pain until you’re seen
Over-the-counter pain relief, taken as directed, can help. Warm salt-water rinses may ease irritation, and a cold compress on the outside of the cheek can reduce swelling. Avoid very hot, cold or hard foods, and do not place aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue.

QHow much does an emergency appointment cost?
It depends on the cause and the treatment required, since a simple examination differs from, say, root canal therapy. We always provide a clear estimate before starting, claim on the spot from all health funds so you only pay the gap, and offer Afterpay and payment plans to spread larger costs.
QDo you accept walk-ins?
We recommend phoning ahead so we can reserve time for you, prepare for your treatment, and keep your waiting time to a minimum. If you do walk in, we will always do our best to see you promptly, though booking by phone first is the fastest way to be seen.
